Fall Flowers

 

Even though it's fall, it doesn't mean it has to be bleak or dreary. Thanks to fall flowers, we can extend the growing season a bit even if it is just to bring some beauty to your garden. In addition, fall flowers are a really important food source to insects and birds before the long and cold winter. 

Here is a list of some fall flowers you might want to plant and grow in your garden: 

  • Chrysanthemum - also known as mums, very common flower for a fall garden. They come in a wide variety of colours and can handle a bit of frost. 
  • Dahlia - interesting looking flowers that come in many colours and shapes.
  • Sunflower - a favourite of bees and birds. Choose a variety that produces edible seeds that you can eat or share with birds. Some varieties can grow really tall, which is definitely a sight to see. 
  • Cosmos - gorgeous and dainty looking flowers to bring some softness into your garden.
  • Gomphrena - an easy to grow plant, that is drought-resistant and requires very little assistance to grow. Lasts until the frost sets in. 
  • Rudbeckia - also known as black-eyed Susan. Long bloomers and will attract plenty of pollinators. 
  • Alyssum - available in purple, pink and white, these delicate looking flowers are actually pretty hardy and can resist some frost. 
  • Asters - when most flowers are done with blooming, it's time for asters to shine. They're the perfect food source for pollinators before winter. Asters are also pretty frost-hardy. 
  • Marigold - these are some hardy flowers that start blooming in the summer and continue to bloom until a hard freeze hits them. Due to their smell, they also can repel some pests. 
  • Pansy - perfect to plant once the summer is over as they don't like heat that much. They will bloom until hard frost. In addition, they come in a wide variety of colours. 
  • Zinnia - a flower that comes in many colours and shapes and is easy to grow. These will produce flowers until the first hard frost.
